On the 6th (March), we were at 13° W, and on this day, we sighted land and approached it. There were two islands, not very large, and we sailed between them in a south-westerly direction, leaving one to the N.W., and then we saw a great number of small sailing boats approaching us, and they moved so fast, they appeared to fly, the sails were triangular in shape and made of woven mat, and filled in both directions, turning poop into prow, and prow into poop, at their whim. They came towards us many times, seeking to pillage whatever they could, they stole thus the skiff of the flag-ship, though we recovered it the next day. There I took the sun, one of these islands [Agana (Guam)] lies at 12°⅔, and the other [Rota] [Mariana Islands] at 13° and some more, and the island at 12° on the same W.N.W. to E.S.E. course as Tiburones which you pass from the north at 20 leagues. We departed from the island which is at 12° on the 9th of March, in the morning, and steered W. ¼ S.W.

The Ladrones Islands are 300 leagues from Gilolo [The Philippines].
