From Poluan we sailed for Bornei [Borneo], and along its coast in a S.W. direction, and near there encountered an island with a shoal to the E. at 7°½ so you must change course to the W. for some 15 leagues. And then we steered S.W., along the island of Bornei until we reached the city itself [Brunei]. Note it is necessary to stay close to the shore, as further out there are many shoals, and you will need to go along with the sounding lead in your hand, because it is a very treacherous coast. Bornei is a large city, with a very large bay, and there are many shoals both inside it and outside, it is, therefore, necessary to have a local pilot with you. We sojourned for several days, and began to trade, and made good peace agreements, but after that they armed many canoes to take us, some 260 in number, and as we saw them coming, we departed in haste. Outside the bay we saw some junks coming, and went to them and captured one, in which was a son of the King of Luzon which is a very large island, so the captain let him go without any consultation. [Without consulting the others officers, it seems that the captain at the time, Juan López Caravallo, took a ransom in exchange for letting the prince go. For this and other reasons, he was put on trial by his peers who elected Gonzalo Gómez de Espinosa and J. S. del Cano to replace him].

Borney [Borneo] is a large island, and there is also in it cinnamon, mirabolams, and camphor, which is worth much in these countries, and they say that when they die, they embalm themselves with it. Borney is in 5° 25' latitude—that is, the port itself—and 201° 5' longitude from the line of demarcation [The Tordesillas Treaty, Greenwich meridian +46º 30’. The equivalent would be 360º 247º 35’ West = 112º 25’ East. The calculations were fairly approximate for the time, before chronometers or precision timepieces existed] and from here we sailed and returned by the same road, and this port of Borney lies E.N.E. W.S.W. with the isle of Mazaba, and on this course there are many islands, and from the cape at the N.E. of Bornei to Quipit it is E.–W., ¼N.E. S.W.
