On the 9th, I did not take the sun, but we made land and anchored, and the coast was very wild, and we remained thus till next day, and the wind shifted to W.S.W., and upon that we set sail, and went along the coast to find some port for anchoring and taking refreshments for the people who were most suffering, which we did not find. And we returned to sea, to be at our ease [out of danger from a land under Portuguese control], and we saw many smokes [fires] along the coast, and the coast was very rocky, without any trees.
