On the 14th, I took the Sun at 76°, it had a declination of 23° 32’, giving an altitude of 9° 32’ and that evening we approached land and sounded but found no bottom, but I believe the water is taking me W. and reckon we are among the shoals of the Río Grande [The Niger]. It was Saturday.
